{"id":35369,"date":"2016-02-22T13:11:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-22T21:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/g9r.3b8.myftpupload.com\/?p=35369"},"modified":"2016-02-23T11:41:57","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T19:41:57","slug":"making-an-ancient-forest-rita-schlamberger-2015-austria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/g9r.3b8.myftpupload.com\/?p=35369","title":{"rendered":"Making An Ancient Forest (Rita Schlamberger, 2015): Austria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Fiesta 1 theater, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 PM.<\/p>\n<p>Full title:\u00a0 <em>Making An Ancient Forest: Kalkalpen National Park<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.vimeocdn.com\/video\/532553164.jpg?mw=1920&amp;mh=1080&amp;q=70\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was my distinct pleasure to see the U.S. premier of this amazing film.\u00a0\u00a0 Directed by Rita Schlamberger, it took three years to make, and it shows.\u00a0 She is particularly well prepared for such complex field work with a<span class=\"st\"> PhD in biology, and a pilot&#8217;s license<\/span>.\u00a0 Her film describes the intricate ecosystem in the Austrian Alps&#8217; Kalkalpen National Park, the largest <span class=\"st\">forest in Europe,<\/span> that was once an abandoned timberland dating back to the middle-ages and now restored by nature back to its &#8216;ancient&#8217; state.\u00a0 It is a stunning work of impeccable beauty that captures amazing hidden views of wildlife hidden deep in the forest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/eshintermedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/linx_big-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The film will often make you ask, &#8220;How did they shoot that?&#8221;\u00a0 We peer through the morning mist and hover across a forest floor, teaming with plants and fungi.\u00a0 We catch a glimpse of a rare bird.\u00a0 We see a huge emperor moth unfold its wings.\u00a0 Vertical camera moves travel effortlessly up the sides of towering trees into the forest canopy.\u00a0 We catch fleeting glimpses of pigmy owls, wild wolves, and steal a peek into a den full of lynx cubs.<\/p>\n<p>The film explains the complex cycle of growth and decay in the forest that is driven by prolific tree growth and kept in check by fungi.\u00a0 The trees actually have a complex communication system to allocate space on the densely covered forest floor.\u00a0 As one tree falls, fungi move in to break it down and return the rich organic matter back to the soil.\u00a0 This signals a new cycle for another tree to take root.<\/p>\n<p>Expertly filmed in Ultra-HD 4K digital format, no pixel is without rich vivid detail.\u00a0 If per chance you see it on broadcast television, you will still be amazed, but you&#8217;re missing out on the full ultra-HD experience.\u00a0 This film really puts a high-end projector and big theater screen to best use.<\/p>\n<p><em>Making An Ancient Forest<\/em> was recently sold to the National Geographic Channel and PBS station WNET.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Fiesta 1 theater, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 PM.
