In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud.\u00a0 Under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody, but unbowed.<\/p>\n

Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade, and yet the menace of the years, finds and shall find me unafraid.<\/p>\n

It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate:\u00a0 I am the captain of my soul.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The words of Henley’s \u00a0Invictus<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was the mantra Nelson Mandela\u00a0repeated to himself within the\u00a0walls of his prison cell.\u00a0 He was released in 1990 and four\u00a0short years later\u00a0became South Africa’s first black president.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How would\u00a0Mandela (Morgan Freeman)\u00a0bring about unity to a severly\u00a0divided country?\u00a0 Cleverly through South Africa’s national\u00a0sport of rugby.\u00a0 The Springboks team had\u00a0one black player amongst all whites, but\u00a0the black South Africans\u00a0invariably rooted for the opposing teams.\u00a0 Mandela openly supported the losing Springboks and championed their team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) on to greatness, which led the team to victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Morgan Freeman is simply amazing as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon pulls off an acceptable accent and performance as Francois Pienaar.\u00a0 However, the most meaningful part in the film is\u00a0Mandela’s (Freeman’s)\u00a0voice-over of Henley’s Invictus during Pienaar’s tour of Mandela’s cell.\u00a0 Sound confusing?\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 All of a sudden in the middle of the film, Pienaar takes a tour of Mandela’s prison cell.\u00a0 Where was my man Clint during editing?\u00a0 Dunno.\u00a0\u00a0Aside from\u00a0this, there\u00a0are several instances where\u00a0you might\u00a0need to turn to the person next to you and say “what’d he say?”<\/p>\n

Overall a good film, a beautiful film, just a little frustrating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
